EWCA discusss with Stakeholders

Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation
Authority, EWCA, in collaboration with  SIMCOT, Simien Mountains Community
Tourism project discusses with stakeholders on challenges recognized on
service providers and tour operators in Simien Mountains National Park,
SMNP, on December 10, 2012 at National Achieve and Library Agency hall,
Addis Ababa.

EWCA Director General, Ewnetu Blata on
the occasion told, SMNP is one of the natural tourist destination areas
in Ethiopia which generates the biggest income.  Ewnetu thanked the
Amhara National Regional State for its contribution in re-demarcating
the boundary and eradicating the existing problems of the
park.

Kassie Berihun, head of North Gondar
Zone Culture and Tourism Department said, SIMCOT-project is a project on
community tourism development through public-private partnership in
Simien Mountains National Park and surrounding areas.

Reconsideration of tourism resources,
setting strategic carrying capacity and marketing based tourism
promotion and product development are the three strategies of SIMCOT-
project, as learned on the occasion. Brief facts of the park like
natural and social heritages, and some challenges were also presented by
debark culture and tourism office.

The park head Sisay Mequanint on his
part said that, misleading information, lack of ethics, sense of
heritage conservation, hygiene and skilled professionals are some of the
problems among service providers in the
park.

Lastly, the Amhara National Regional
State Bureau of Culture, Tourism and Parks Development, ANRS-BCTPD head
Mulugeta Seid facilitating the discussion told participants that, all
stakeholders are expected to contribute their share to improve quality
of services offered in SMNP.  

Then Participants from Ministry of
Culture and Tourism, ANRS-BCTPD, EWCA, SIMCOT-project and tour operators
entertain ideas on SMNP issues
particularly.

It is pointed on the occasion that tour
operators are one of the important stakeholders in wildlife tourism and
such a discussion is the first of its kind and it will be
continued. 

It is remembered that SIMCOT-project is
operating since November 2011 to build public and private stakeholders
partnership on SMNP and its surroundings and will end in October 2014.
